We have lots of volcanoes to use in our "Grand Finale" for our States of Matter and Changes in Matter units in science. More photos and videos to come later!
Many of the second graders are now working on their final copies of their research projects. I have been so impressed with their hard work and dedication to their projects. They have been working on adding topic and closing sentences to their paragraphs. They are also required to add at least 4 text features to their published work. Second graders were also given an introductory lesson on Google Slides in computer lab, and are now given the option to work on a presentation to go along with their research projects.
During our Reader's Workshop we have been reading non-fiction text to learn about different topics, as well as various text features. This week students began independently working on a Text Features Scavenger Hunt using iPads. First, they took photos of 6-8 different text features found in 1-2 non-fiction books. Then, they created a collage on PicKids. Finally, as they are finishing they are uploading their work to Seesaw. It has been fun to watch the second graders work together and take ownership of discovering and using text features on their own.
Thank you to all of the families that were able to attend STEAMM Night at Kennedy. The event was a success-everyone seemed to have lots of fun. My classroom was home to one of the math game rooms and it was packed most of the night. Here are a few photos I was able to capture of some of our class that were able to stop in and play games.
In Science we have been learning about physical changes in matter. Second graders used Play-Doh to demonstrate physical changes in matter. We began by using a balance to show physical changes in pieces of Play-Doh of the same size will still have the same mass. Second graders broke their Play-Doh into two equal pieces and created physical changes. We discussed rolling, teaching, pinching, and squishing are all types of physical changes. As a follow up activity the second graders created physical changes to paper. We cut, folded, and bent paper to create physical changes. By folding, cutting, and bending the second graders created fortune tellers. We had so much fun with them!
Second graders are working to put their research into paragraphs and add topic sentences. We will be working on this for a week. The next steps will be proof-reading, editing, and publishing!
