April is National Poetry Month and we have been celebrating! We have been reading, writing, sharing, and exploring poetry. This past week the second graders visited a different second grade teacher each day to learn about a new type of poem. This week we wrote haiku, alliteration, color, and diamante poems. Next week will be writing autobiographical and shapes poems. We will also be studying poetry vocabulary such as similes, metaphors, stanza, and rhythm. The entire grade level will end the month with a "Poetry Slam" next week. After next week we will continue writing and exploring poetry for another week.

In math we are exploring geometry. This week our focus was on creating quilts and recording mathematical observations about the quilts. We talked about arrays and using equations to show our thinking. Today the second graders created their own unique quilt blocks to use next week to discuss symmetry and tessellations.
We began a new unit in math this week. Our focus is geometry. This week students explored, created, observed, and recorded different triangles and quadrilaterals. We defined many different shapes and sorted the shapes in student created categories. Everyone has been enjoying the hands on activities this week!
Wow! This group of second graders has been working SO HARD these past few weeks! They started by selecting topics they were excited to research. Then, they did research and took notes using at least two sources. They had to take their notes and create full sentences and paragraphs. Next, the second graders had to create a bibliography. The final steps were to create a final copy, add multiple text features, and upload their work to Seesaw. These smiles are pure PRIDE at the hard work they did!
