We had a lesson on schema this week. Second graders learned about schema and how to activate their schema when they read. We read the book Up North at the Cabin and all students came up with something in the book that activated their schema to help them better understand the book. We will refer back to this lesson many times throughout the year to remember strategies to help understand the books we read on a deeper level! |

This week in math the second graders did a variety of activities. They created and solved equations on their math boards. The second graders also continued to explore math work places and practice our norms for work place time. Finally, we used the beetles we created last week to sort, discuss, and graph different attributes. Second graders used their beetles to create clue cards about themselves for their classmates to try and figure out which beetle belongs to which second grader-we will be doing that next week!
Throughout the week we played several games and did team building activities together. Some of these included: Octopus Tag, Buzz, Pop, 4 Corners, Building a Web, and Cup Stacking. We also began exploring our math manipulatives and practicing how we will use work places for math throughout the year. Seconds graders practiced using a quiet voice, working together, taking care of materials, and cleaning up. In math students are created beetle glyphs to teach us more information about themselves. We will use these beetles for a variety of sorting activities and work places. We worked a lot on reading stories and thinking about what kind of classroom we want this school year. Second graders worked with me to write their hopes and dreams for the school year and also create an agreement for our classroom on how we will make our classroom a fun, safe, working place!
It has been an exciting week in second grade! We have enjoyed getting to know one another, learning classroom procedures, developing hopes and rules for our classroom community, and having lots of fun!
