In math we posed the question "How Long is 1,000?". We used plastic links to help us out. First, the second graders worked in teams to create 10 chains of 10. Then they put their chains together to form 100. Our final step was to create a LONG chain of 10 groups of 100. We practiced counting by 10s and 100s. The second graders predicted how long our chain would be. Then we make predictions on if a human chain would be longer than our link chain (it wasn't). Our chain stretched all the way from the playground doors to the intersection of the hallway. What a fun way to see how long 1,000 might look like! After measuring 1,000 clips in the hallway, we broke the chain into 100 clips again. The students worked in teams to measure classroom items and to separate their findings into 100s, 10s, and 1s.
