Math Workshop
1. Number Corner: During this time students work on various math skills in a routine format. This month we have been working on clocks (hours and collecting minutes), odd and even numbers, relationships between addition and subtraction equations, and basic facts +/- 1 and +/- 0.
2. Problems and Investigations: This is the time the second graders receive their main lesson from me. This week our focus has been on addition problems to 10 and addition problems to 20. The second graders have been using number racks to see the relationships between the numbers and practice grouping numbers by fives and tens.
3. Work Places: A class favorite! This is when students work on their own at different math stations. All students have a work place log where they keep track of where they have been. At this time students are still exploring manipulatives. We also introduced a beetle station where students have to use clues to figure out which beetle glyph belongs to which child. We also have tried two games this week (one was sent home as a home connection for you to try!).
Reader's and Writer's Workshops
During Reader's Workshop we have been doing a shared reading each day. During this time I read a story aloud and the students discuss they story with a partner with guided questions. The second graders continue to practice building their stamina to read and do other independent activities while I begin to meet with students for reading instruction in small groups or 1:1.
