This week our class studied the voting process. We began our mini-unit with reading a book about voting. We discussed vocabulary such as: candidates, election, polls, and ballot. We learned about how you can learn about different candidates (TV, newspaper, websites) and discussed how voting can be private. Students also learned you need to be 18 to participate in an official election. To put the process into practice we had a classroom election of our own. Second graders were put into groups and each group was assigned a candidate. The candidates were different types of cookies. Groups were to create a convincing poster about why we should vote for their cookie. After creating the posters, groups had to present a commercial to convince us to vote for their cookie. After the commercials, we set up a voting booth in the classroom. The second graders had to come and register (first and last name, address, phone number) and were then able to vote. We tallied up the votes, and the winner was... The students had a great time working together, presenting their work, and having a vote. It was a great, fun way to learn about the voting process!
