This week the Hastings Public Schools took part in a world-wide event: Hour of Code. Students from all over the world took the time to learn how to do some computer programming. In computer lab, the second graders explored programming with Angry Birds characters. Your child can access this (and more) on https://code.org/learn. This link will also provide you with more information about the event. Coding is about teamwork, critical-thinking, creativity, perseverance, and problem-solving, and the second graders were able to demonstrate all of these qualities in their hard word exploring the world of code. In the classroom, students worked in teams to explore different coding apps (all FREE!). They had so much fun and look forward to continuing their exploration! The apps we checked out were: Daisy the Dinosaur, The Foos, Box Island, and Lightbot.

This week we did a short 3 lesson introductory unit on different shapes, focusing on quadrilaterals. Second graders also learned about parallel lines and different properties of triangles. After taking the test on Thursday, we did some exploration fun. Students rotated between geoboards, pattern blocks, and iPads. With the geoboards, students were able to create the shapes we had just talked about and make designs in a hands on experience. The pattern blocks allowed the second graders to put the different shapes together to create new shapes. Finally, the second graders tried out some new math apps for me!
We began our second unit in writing this week. Our second unit focuses on encouraging students to add more to their stories. Add more details. Add more adjectives. Add more information. One assignment they had was to write a story about a fantasy trip to made up place. They were so excited and eager to write. I had to capture their engagement!!!
