Second graders worked hard in math this week! We began a new unit and have been working on many skills. We began the week by playing a new game and practicing our skip counting by 5s and 10s. Then, we worked on estimating a number of craft sticks in a bucket. Students then brainstormed ways to combine the sticks to make them easier to count. The class helped me create bundles of ten,and then bundles of 100. As we counted, we revised our estimates (not shown). We counted the sticks together and came up with 643 sticks! We ended the week with trying a new strategy (the "splitting" strategy) for solving two-digit addition and learning another new game!

Though, as readers we will continue to visualize forever, we finished up our main visualizing unit for the school year. Students demonstrated their learning by using sticky notes to mark and share spots where they made visualizations. They also wrote journal entries. Finally, students heard the poem "Green Giant" and drew illustrations of their mental images and noted words from the text that helped them with their mental images!
Last week when the students practiced visualizing they would listen to a story and draw the pictures they made in their minds. This week they took the practice a step further. The second graders read their own "good fit" books and marked a spot they made a visualization with a sticky note. Then they got together with their partners and read the part in their books that made them visualize and described their visualizations. The final step (not pictured) students wrote a journal entry describing visualizations and using text evidence to support their thinking.
This week in math we worked on measurement. Students created their own measuring strips and measured items in cubes around the classroom. We later applied what we learned and practiced measuring and adding two numbers together to get a total measurement.
