This week the second graders finished up our first until in math. We took the test, did some reteaching, and moved on to our new unit. In our next unit of study in math we will be working on estimation, place value, adding larger numbers, and subtracting larger numbers. There is a literacy theme/connection to Jack and the Beanstalk this unit, so you may notice lots of references to beans and the story. We began the unit listening to a Tumblebooks (you can check out Tumblebooks on the Kennedy Digital Resources page!) version of Jack and the Beanstalk. Then we took an ENTIRE bag of Lima beans and the students estimated the number of beans in the bag. Then we separated the beans and groups worked together to count the beans they were given. Then we put ALL the beans together and grouped them into hundreds, tens, and ones and got a final count of 711 beans!
Our class celebrated making great choices today by having a "Creative Day". The second graders were able to build, paint, draw, and create with different materials. It was so much fun to see what amazing art they made. This is a very creative group. Such a fun time! Partners worked together to fill in a simple Story Structure graphic organizer to go along with the book The Perfect Nest. The students included characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end.
