For example: Target sum is 13. A student could do 6+7. Or a student could use more cards to make the target sum. 1 + 5 + 3 + 4 = 13.
We played a new math game for workplaces last week called "Make the Sum". This game could be easily modified and played at home with a regular deck of cards. Students pick a target sum from 5-15. Then each player takes turns flipping over a card. If a student can make the target some with any of the cards he or she takes all of the cards to make that sum. Keep playing until all the cards possible have been used. The player with the most cards wins. For example: Target sum is 13. A student could do 6+7. Or a student could use more cards to make the target sum. 1 + 5 + 3 + 4 = 13.

Here are some photos of what we have been working on as readers. You can see our posters we have created to discuss habits of good readers. The other photos show how engaged the second graders have been in their reading to build their stamina. There are also some photos of words sorts and picking good fit books.
This week in math was all about numbers to 10 and 20. Second graders worked on representing numbers, counting by 5s and 10s, figuring out how many more from a number would be needed to get to 10 or 20 and comparing numbers using greater than, less than, and equal to.
Math This Week: Explored manipulatives Practiced Work Places Used Venn diagrams to sort/categorize beetles Created picture and bar graphs to show beetle data Wrote clue cards for our own beetles to use next week Literacy This Week: Learned 3 Ways to Read a Book: Read the Words, Read the Pictures, Retell Practiced building stamina for reading Learned and practiced expecations for Independent Daily Reading (IDR) Worked on turning and talking with a partner Practiced read aloud expectations Learned about and practiced picking "Good Fit" books using the I-PICK method A few more...
Much of our time this week was spent getting to know one another, talking about the type of classroom we want to have, thinking of our goals for the year and coming up with classroom agreements. In the photos you can see students working on their hopes and dreams, posters with sticky notes of students hopes and goals, and many of the books we read.
