As you can see from the photos our math curriculum is very hands on! In the top photos of students, they are making different arrays (rectangles) using 10 tiles. We will be doing this activity again throughout the month with different numbers. This helps build the foundation for multiplication, while learning about even and odd numbers, repeated addition, and geometry along the way! Next, you will see students working with beans. The second graders had to estimate what they thought would be 50 beans. Then they had to count their actual number and find the difference. Then, the combined with a partner to see how close they were to 100 beans. Finally, you will student working with groups of Unifix cubes. They were showing numbers using sticks of ten, and loose ones. They had to show numbers in different ways. For examples, when showing 43, students might first show 4 tens sticks and 3 loose cubes. Then, they might change to 3 tens sticks, and 13 loose cubes.
